Buju Banton's powerful, gravelly voice sometimes overshadows his brilliant lyrics and perfectly timed flow. Picking up where Shabba Ranks left off, the Jamaican star won his homeland over with his two first albums in the '90s, but would squander the opportunity for international appeal by releasing material that was both violent and homophobic in nature. Converting to Rastafarianism inspired a more thoughtful approach to his songwriting, leading to the acclaimed 'Til Shiloh. Unfortunately this newfound spirituality wouldn't last, and he would be indicted on drug and weapons charges in '09.
